What is tissue ?
Tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function in the body. In multicellular organisms like humans, tissues are the building blocks of organs and organ systems. Different types of tissues have different structures and functions.
Types of tissues
There are four primary types of tissue in the human body:
1. Epithelial tissue:
Epithelial tissue is made up of cells that cover the surfaces of the body, both inside and out. This type of tissue can be found in the skin, the lining of the digestive tract, and the lining of organs such as the lungs and kidneys.
2.Connective tissue:
Connective tissue provides support and structure to the body. It includes tissues such as bone, cartilage, and adipose (fat) tissue, as well as blood and lymph.
3.Muscle tissue:
Muscle tissue is responsible for movement in the body. There are three types of muscle tissue: skeletal muscle, which is responsible for voluntary movements such as walking; smooth muscle, which lines the walls of internal organs and is responsible for involuntary movements such as peristalsis in the digestive tract; and cardiac muscle, which is found only in the heart.
4.Nervous tissue:
Nervous tissue includes the neurons and supporting cells that make up the nervous system. It is responsible for transmitting information throughout the body and coordinating bodily functions.
